D' une façon générale, et pour " résumer " , " Pat Pending " est la mention donnée à un produit aux U.S.A ( en l' occurrence une guitare ) lorsque ce produit est d' un design nouveau, original ...et surtout, lorsque ce produit est en attente de la validation du brevet idoine ( même si le terme " brevet " n'est pas le plus indiqué ...). Une fois le brevet " validé" , la guitare sera labellisée non plus " Pat Pending ...." mais Patents N°s suivi du " numéro" de la dite " patent " !
Par exemple sur les toutes premières N4, fabriquées de 1990 à début 92, les " Davies " , on peut lire sur la jonction corps/ manche " U.S and For Pats Pending " alors que sur les premières N4 de 1993 on peut lire " Patent Nos 4856403/4905563 " .
Bien souvent, les modèles " Pat Pending " servent à tester la viabilité d' un modèle qui sera,par la suite, fabriqué en série ...

patent 1) adj. obvious. Used in such expressions as a "patent defect" in an appliance. 2) n. an exclusive right to the benefits of an invention or improvement granted by the United States Patent Office, for a specific period of time, on the basis that it is novel (not previously known or described in a publication), "non-obvious" (a form which anyone in the field of expertise could identify), and useful. There are three types of patents: a) "utility patent" which includes a process, a machine (mechanism with moving parts), manufactured products, and compounds or mixtures (such as chemical formulas); b) "design patent" which is a new, original and ornamental design for a manufactured article; and c) "plant patent" which is a new variety of a cultivated asexually reproduced plant. Example: Secretary of Agriculture and later Vice President Henry A. Wallace developed hybrid corn which made him rich for life.
