"General thoughts on the current RIs.
The JTM45 will be softer in attack, rounder in tone, not as loud, and less gainy than a Plexi 50. The RI's are quite good stock, and can be easily modded to take KT66s. Remember, they are "just" 32 watts or so. Think playin' the blues.
The 1987x Plexi RI will have a very tight attack, are more gained up, have a great glassy top end, and get insanely loud very, very fast. They too are commonly modded, with conventional wisdom being to snip the bright cap on Ch 1. Think bringin' the RAWK (if you can handle the volume).
Head over to the Les Paul Forum / Amplifiers page (if you haven't already) and do a search. There is a wealth of wisdom on the threads there, about the current RI models and links to pages for suggested mods.
You can mod either one back to "classic" 1960s specs with aftermarket parts and boards, the LPF has numerous links to these sites. Depends on how much dough you want to spend or if you want to do it at all. Try listening to these RI amps stock, first. Used clean examples of the RIs sell at the $800-850 level (I recently sold my minty 87x RI for $850.)
As for the vintage Plexis and 45s, prices are going up as we speak. Fewer and fewer all-original examples are out there.
If you're leaning toward the Plexi thing, some general history:
- Marshall stopped making handwired 50 watters in mid-1973.
- Before that date, the classic 50s with true Plexi panels are few and rare. The later ones (still pre-73) had metal panels, but still had the same handwired guts.
- The post-73 circuit board amps, still 4-holers, are going up in value now, seen recently in the mid-teens. All-original examples are again getting rare and expensive.
- The later you go in that era, the more gain they tend to develop. "
