Here's where the problem starts. If you ever hear someone say that a 2205 sounds great, he or she probably owns one from after '83/'84. Some people talk about the Drake transformer in the older ones as being an advantage. Well, I'll tell you: it doesn't make a difference. Even worse, my amp guy has all the schematics of all Marshalls. The 2205 and 2210 have been changed so many times over the years, that it's nearly impossible to be sure if yours is a piece of junk or an absolute gift from heaven. Mine turned out to be junk. This was the first time Marshall made dual channel amps with reverb and effectsloop, and solid state clipping for overdrive. So, unfortunately they didn't master that area yet. The sound is horrible, no headroom, reverb is useless. It doesn't give the guitar reverb, it just creates a reverb behind the guitar sound. The overdrive/solid state clipping is technically placed in a bad spot. If you use overdrive stompboxes, or equalizers, or even EMG pickups, this amp will not be able to handle it. If you're gonna get one of these, be sure to try it out, and to check if it's a newer model. Don't get me wrong, I love Marshalls, but this one sucks. Now I own a JCM 800 2210 from 1989, and it's a whole different thing. Again, the inside is totally different from the earlier models, and all the problems from my 2205 do not occur with my newer 2210. I've also had a JCM 900 SLX 100 watt, and a 30th anniversary fullstack in blue, even a valvestate 8080 and all sounded better than this JCM 800 2205. Watch out!!
Marshalls rule, but if you want an old one, get a JCM 800 2203 or 2204, even a JMP. If you want two channels, be safe and get one from 1985 or later. Try your amp out first! I bought mine through ebay in Germany, and it's a big risk. You never know how the amp is going to sound.
-------------------------------------------
The 2205 and 2210 models made around 83 and 84 are different from later models in that their clean channel sounds real good and their lead channel sucks! They reversed this however and these 85 and later models have probably the absolute meanest sounding lead distortion ever, with the exception of the 72 50watt.
