"My amp tech has tested old Plexis and this is what his general power rating worked out to:
Marshall 50 watt Plexis: 55-60 watts clean (around 2-3 on the volume knob), and when turned up to 8-10, right around 95-100 watts.
Marshall 100 watt Plexis:
130-160 clean, and 190-220 dimed. The most he ever measured one at was
235.
As an example, the new Komet Concorde, is a dual EL 34 amp, rated at 50 clean. Actual wattage 60.4 clean, 96 dimed.
I have a JCM 800 manual, and it reflects these exact same wattages, although they say the 100 watt JCM 800 will put out 170 watts at 10% distortion (dimed).
So do the math...4 M75/G12M 25 watt speakers. Mine actually handle 27-28 each, that's still only 112 watts...so you're 50 watt head is fine.
But a 100 watt head? You could probably get away with it for a little while, but then there'd be that crackling sound, the sickening smell, then the silence...well, actually, the silence would be broken by your sobbing, and tears. Very Happy
There's a reason I make the 65 watt HP models, so guys with 100 watt amps can use a single 4x12. There's a reason Celestion went with the G12-65's and the G12-80's in the late 70's, too...they got tired of replacing speakers under warranty.
And since the old 100 watt Plexis were always sold with two cabs, it had to mean that Marshall knew what their amps put out, and how much speaker power handling it required.
Tomorrow morning, I'm having some fun. I have an original 1967 100 watt Super Tremolo head here. I'm testing it for someone doing an internet deal (I'm just the guy validating the amp's power) with the buyer.
I plan on hooking up two 120 watt Scumback loaded cabs to it, not one.
I hope that answers your questions about the wattage. If anyone wants to download the JCM800 manual I'm talking about, it's right here:

You're asking for trouble putting a 100 watt (healthy) head into a 100 watt cab...unless you have money falling out of your bung hole and enjoy changing out speakers...or your 100 watt head isn't really putting out as much as you think."
a l'epoque celestion en avait marre des HP en retour garantie
forcement ils sont devenues rares ces HPs.
