Nepalese Children Build a Shrine to Dolly Parton
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DARJEELING, INDIA — Nepalese children living in Darjeeling, near the India-Nepal border, worship Dolly Parton. So when it snowed recently, they built a snow woman in her likeness.
"She is definitely a fertility figure," said a Western anthropologist who was visiting Darjeeling. "The locals live on a subsistence diet of tea and sympathy, and are very thin. So they worship those full mammaries. Just think of all the protein they could derive from her milk production."
"We could also have milk in our tea," said village head man Ratnasambhava Goldberg.
The local population has given Dolly a Nepalese name, Chomolungma, variously translated as "Goddess Mother of the Snows," "Lady Cow" or "Lungs So Humongous That No Man Can Believe It."
Western linguistic experts visiting Darjeeling disagree about the authenticity of this name and even its spelling. One, for example, said she was called Chha-mo-lung-ma while another said Dolly was called Jo-mo-glan-ma. "She's a gland-ma to the local people," he said.
