thank you antoine, that is exactly the post that i was hoping for, a polite and reasonable response, yes I agree completely..we are both strong heads, and this has i believe led to an unnecessary escaltion of this dispute...I would be more than happy to contribute significantly towards the cost of having the neck refinished, I would pay 80% of the cost of this..and for us to end our conflict....I really was not aware at the time of sale of any cement fix to the finish, and I apologise for not seeing this and noting it in the listing...I do believe that you have an excellent guitar there, and if the neck is refinished to your satisfaction you will own an instrument that will give you many hours of joy..

does this seem a reasonable offer to you?

It is a good thing that we can discuss this on an open forum and get the input of other opinions, rather than just exchanging angry emails as we have been previously doing!!... I believe that this is a good thing.

Je suis heureux que la situation s’apaise…
Je dois en référé à mon ami (pour qui j’ai fait la transaction) pour savoir si votre proposition lui convient.
Par contre il faudrait que je sache à quelle somme correspond votre offre… (un tel travail de décapage et revernissage d’un manche collé ce chiffre facilement au alentour de 300€…)
Je suis bien conscient que cette guitare sonne certainement très bien, mais comme ce n’est pas moi qui en décide au final…

Il y a toujours une autre solution pour laquelle nous serions tous gagnant (sauf moi qui en fin de compte perdrait la perspective d’un travail de restauration de verni), c’est de faire un retour de la guitare et un remboursement…
Dans ce cas évidemment les frais de réexpédition serait à notre charge…
(Vous perdez les frais et commissions d’Ebay et Paypal, les frais de la première expédition, et nous perdons les frais de change Paypal –Aïe, c’était 33€–, et les frais d’expédition retour)
L’autre avantage de cette solution est que je connais très bien le patron d’un magasin de musique à Cahors (je crois que ce n’est pas loin de chez vous), dans ce cas il pourrait faire l’intermédiaire, et la transaction retour se ferait en toute transparence (vous pourrait constater que l’instrument est tel que vous l’aviez expédier, avant de d’effectuer le remboursement et la récupérer…)
Je pense que dans ces conditions cela pourrait être une bonne solution pour vous, vous évitant de perdre de l’argent sur les frais de réparation.
Dites moi ce que vous pensez de cette solution, pendant que je contacte mon ami pour qu’il me donne son avis.
Je dois vous avouer que je ne m’attendais pas à ce que ce forum soit aussi bénéfique à notre situation.

I must summary the procedure to my friend (for who I made the transaction) to know if your proposal is appropriate to him.
Bur it would be necessary that I know with which sum corresponds your offer... (a revarnishing work for a set neck cost easily arround 300€...)
I am quite sure that this guitar sounds well, but I have to ask my friend what he would prefer...

There is always another solution for which we would be all winner (except me which in the final analysis would lose a work of restoration and varnishing…), it is to make a return of the guitar and a refunding...
In this case obviously the expenses of reforwarding would be our load...
(In this case, you loose, Ebay and Paypal commisions, first shipping cost, and we loose Paypal exchange commisions – ouch : it was 33€ –, and shipping back cost)
The other adavantage of this solution is that I know very well the owner of a music store in Cahors (I believe that it is not far from your place), in this case he could be intermediary, and the return transaction would be done in all transparency (you could note that the instrument is such as you had dispatch it, before refunding and recovering it...)
I think that under these conditions that could be a good solution for you, avoiding you losing money on the expenses of repair.
Tell me what is your opinion on those solutions while I ask my friend what he think about your proposal…
I must acknowledge that I did not expect that this forum is so beneficial to clarify our situation.

if you would get 2 quotes for a revarnishing of the neck that would be a good starting point ..is €300 a reasonable cost? I have had a whole guitar refinished in nitrocellulose for that much?

I thought the guitar was for you not for your friend...

does anyone on this forum have an idea of the cost of refinishing a poly neck on a les paul?

I really do think that if the main issue is a poor finish on the neck then me offering to pay for a neck refinish..(if the cost is reasonable of course) that this would be the ideal solution...

or does your friend have other problems with the guitar that i should be aware of?

In Bruxelles, when I asked last year, I was told refinishing a neck would cost around 150€. In Paris it's probably more expensive... in Tarbes ?

Effectivement je peux vous affirmer que c’est pour un ami.
La personne en question vous avait contacté pendant la vente Mark (pseudo : snaikk, à Toulouse).
Si cela avait été ma guitare, votre proposition aurait été toute accepté.

Dans le cas d’un verni de manche, voici les tarifs que l’on peut trouver (ce sont des exemples…pas de la pub)
Il faut compter dès le départ un coût supplémentaire pour les teintes, raccord couleurs, vernis opaques… (20€-50€ suivant les cas)

-manche vissé, verni translucide mat, touche non mapple : 110€-130€ (touche mapple : 130€-150€)
-manche vissé, verni brillant (PU ou cellulo) : 130€-150€ (touche mapple : 150€-180€)
-manche collé (donc masquages et raccords) mat : 150€-200€ (suivant les cas )
-manche collé ( ‘’ ) brillant (PU ou cellulo) : 200€-250€ (filets, forme : décaper et repolir un manche collé est beaucoup plus complexe)

Dans ce cas il y a une difficulté supplémentaire, celle coups, il faut obligatoirement reprendre les marques dans le bois sans savoir quel est l'état sous les masticages (sinon ça ne sert à rien de revernir).

Donc, si je dois faire un devis pour un client lambda dans un cas comme celui-là :
- 230€ (4ème cas) + 30€ couleur noire + 30€ reprise des défauts bois (et surprises lors du travail sur les point mastiqués) soit au total : 290€.
Je précise (ce n’est pas évident à comprendre quand on n’est pas du métier), revernir un manche collé seul est pratiquement plus difficile que de revernir un instrument complet (à cause des masquages / protections / raccords couleur / raccord verni et polissage). Au final un travail complet pour revernir le aussi corps ne serait pas le double du tarif, mais serait de 450€, ce que j’avais donné comme tarif précédemment dans le forum (plus de boulot de décapage, de préparation, mais niveau verni, polissage et raccords, c’est beaucoup plus simple).
Dans le cas présent, évidemment que je ferai aussi un geste pour cet ami. Mais ce serait de refaire l’ensemble de l’instrument (car même si ce n’est qu’esthétique, il y a d’autres coup et mastiques sur le corps).
Pour ma part, je trouve que vous faites une proposition très honorable Mark.

In the case of varnished a neck, I give you price list (they are examples... not promotion)
It is necessary to count upon the departure an additional cost for the colored varnish (opaque or not), join colors ... (20€-50€ according to the cases)

- bolt on neck, varnished translucent matt, no mapple fretboard : 110€-130€ (mapple fretboard : 130€-150€)
- bolt on neck, gloss finish (PU or cellulo): 130€-150€ (mapple fretboard: 150€-180€)
- set neck (thus maskings and varnish join) matt finish: 150€-200€ (according to the cases)
- set neck ( '' ) gloss finish (PU or cellulo): 200€-250€ (according bidding, form : remove varnish and repolish a set neck is much more complex)

In this case there is an additional difficulty, that of cementing, it is necessary to fill up the marks in wood and I cant say what is the state of the cement fix parts (not doing that will be non sense to revarnish).

Therefore, if I must make an estimate for a lambda customer a case like that one:
- 230€ (4th case) + 30€ black color + 30€ restore wood (and surprised when removing the cement fix parts) total : 290€.
I specify (it is not obvious to understand for "non luthier" person), to revarnish a set neck only is practically more difficult than to revarnish the all instrument (because of maskings/protections/join color join and polishing).
Finally, a complete work of revarnishing (body at the same time) would not be the double of the cost, but would be 450€, what I ve give as cost for restsoration work previously in the forum (more work for remove varnish, for preparation, but varnishing, polishing and join is much simpler).
In this case, obviously I will do also something for this friend. But would be to restore the whole of the instrument (because even if it is only cosmetic, there is blows and cement fix on the body).
For my part, I find that your proposal is really honest Mark.
I tell you if my friend is okay today (think he will be)

Plus sérieusement, pour ebay, je crois que tu peux retirer la notation négative mais pour le commentaire je ne suis pas sur.

D'après ce que j'ai lu, on ne peut faire qu'un retrait simultané des 2 évaluations que chacun à laissé à l'autre (dommage pour moi, la mienne était bonne... tant pis, je le ferai, évidement.). Mais effectivement le commentaire reste apparant.
De mon coté, il est simple de modifier la page qui est en lien dans le commentaire et indiquer le bon dénouement de l'affaire, que GeneralUnrest est vraiment un vendeur fiable et donc de ne pas considérer ce commentaire.
