CORAL (source CODA, dispo en Juin à priori)
This amp is related to our heritage series of amplifiers due to its relationship to the Custom,
Custom Reverb, and Jet line of amplifiers.
Both the Jet and the Custom Reverb had grown in to entities of their own in the last 5 years, andtheir relationship to each other as a low wattage version and a high wattage version had grownapart. We really felt it was time to take all of the versions, all of the design work over the last 10plus years, and make a new amp… the Coral.
Why the name Coral?! In the beginning years of Two-Rock’s history, we had always found a
precious stone to use as a name. Names such as Topaz, Emerald, Ruby and Sapphire were allused for different models. We wanted to go back to that naming sequence and we came up with Coral.
How does this amp differ from previous versions such as the Custom Reverb or the Jet
line of amplifiers?
1. Passive Effects loop – In previous versions of the Custom Reverb and Jet amplifiers, the
effects loops were a fixed/adjustable value and half buffered on the return. In the Coral,
the loop is completely passive much like the early Custom, leaving the user with a less
compressed tone.
2. The amp is voiced similar to the original Custom amplifier rather than the newer Custom
Reverb versions.
3. The Overdrive section of the amp is more of an extension of the clean channel or can be
described as an added gain stage to the clean channel.
4. The reverb circuit is a post master circuit with a lower signal to noise ratio. You can
adjust the reverb to get a full on surf type verb or much smaller effect. Also, we’ve added an overdrive reverb send and return for added flexibility in the overdrive channel.
5. New output transformer with only the 4 and 8 ohm output taps and we’ve added more
outputs for multiple extension cabs.
6. Traditional Presence control instead of the contour.
7. New wattage ranges of 22 with a tube rectifier, 4 6V6 40 Watt, 50 watt solid state rectified or tube rectified and 100 watt.
8. Fixed or cathode bias modes for all but the 100 watt.
9. Unlike the Jet and Custom Reverb, we’re using only the large head and combo size
cabinets.
10. 22 and 40 Watt combos are paired with a Celestion G12-65.
More Info and a Players Perspective
How does this amp differ from the Custom Reverb and Jet models?
The Coral has a similar amount of gain on tap as the Custom Reverb and the Jet. The big
difference however, is in the loop. Without the buffer on the loop, it is less compressed and
there is a better ratio of preamp gain moving to the power stage. The Coral is tight and focused.
Tonally the Coral is less transparent than the Bi-Onyx or Sensor. And don’t confuse
transparency with touch sensitivity or pick attack. It’s more in the front of the mix and really hits you in the face.
The Coral has a traditional Two-Rock gain structure with cascading gain controls that allow for subtle adjustments and a smooth transition from the clean channel to the overdrive channel. In a cascading gain structure, the 2 channels are very similar. Single channel players will love the ease in which both channels react to each other and 2 channel players will love the fact that both channels offer that 2 channel versatility.
What are the advantages of a cascading gain platform?
This amp really allows you to interact and fine tune the amplifier more than a discrete 2 channel amplifier. With discrete two channel amps, you have two channels that can often sound very different than one another, and are often hard to control in a band mix.
With cascading gain structure you have two channels that interact and pair with each other, and work as an extension of a core sound. This allows you to interact with the amplifier in a very personal and dynamic fashion, delivering many degrees of gain and attack. It also delivers tones that are related to one another, and helps keep your sound “in the mix”.
