Pour You Don't Believe Me :
Citation:
YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME was a writing collaboration between Jimmy Page, Phil May and producer Bobby Graham. A jangling folk-rock piece, most likely influenced by Page's recent relationship with Jackie DeShannon, it wasn't a typical Pretty Things song, but Graham thought it would make a great opener for the album, perhaps even a single. The session was booked for September 14, 1965, the day after John Stax's wedding. Stax was off on his honeymoon, so the band arranged for John "Fred" Gandy of the Fairies to play bass on the session. As it turned out,
they ended needing a drummer too. Following the wedding reception, Viv Prince got arrested outside a pub and was thrown in Bow Street cells for the night. Twink, then drummer for the Fairies (and later a Pretty Things himself) ended up doing the session. "I was living with John Gandy at the time and I just went along to the session with him, just to hang out", he remembers. "So when I got there they were very pleased to see me, because Viv was in jail." As to whether Taylor or Page plays guitar on the session, no one is quite sure. "I
think I play guitar", says Dick, "because I know there was a problem with Jimmy Page's guitar not being in tune and either I played guitar on my guitar or he played guitar on my guitar." For what it's worth Page definitely plays tambourine on the track. "He was banging it on the floor, I seem to remember", says Twink. No matter who plays what, it's a dynamite track*. Graham gives it a superb, booming production, the rhythm section is rock solid, and Phil distinguishes himself with a heart-tugging vocal.
Pour Buzz the Jerk :
Citation:
BUZZ THE JERK was a more or less spontaneous creation. "Instant", says Dick. "I got my new fuzzbox, and the riff was based on the old soul riff kind of thing. We just did it." John Stax blasts out a super-solid heavy soul bassline, Pendleton chops, Taylor stings
and once again you can only marvel at the sharp, inventive drumming of Vivian St. John Prince.
Citation:
WE'LL PLAY HOUSE was laid down the same day as
You Don't Believe Me with Fred Gandy on bass, Twink on drums and Dick supplying the feedback and fast-fingered frets runs on Jimmy Page's Danelectro. "It wasn't actually scheduled for the session", remembers Twink. "We just kind of jammed along to that beat. Phil did the vocal afterwards and then it made it to the album." May's vocal is suitably off the cuff, too, spinning sweet lies to some poor bird with lines like, "I've never been without a girl... You're the first girl I've ever known!"
Get The Picture?.
