There are good guitars and bad guitars. Not all 50s / 60s guitars were
magic sounding. But the market still charges the same price for a '62
Strat - good or bad. Anything 30+ yrs old now is deemed Vintage. We
are made to believe that older is better. Many old Strats / Tele's from
this era were awesome sounding instruments, just not all. The main
problem for 70s Fenders was the decisions CBS made regarding cost
cutting. Less Contour, different Finish, 3 Bolt Neck, Sloppy Fit (neck
pockets) Heavier Wood, although this was also due to players in this
period feeling the heavier body produced heavier tone ? The era of
Brass Nuts, Humbucker in the Bridge etc.

The seventies have always been my favourite period for both Strats and Teles!!! I realize that they made some pretty bad ones once in a while in that period (especially towards the end - e.g. there seem to by an endless supply of 1979 Strats and many of them are very heavy...), but they made some very sweet ones too..!
I have never had the opportunity to try a fifties Fender (neither Start nor Tele..
) but I have owned a 1963 Stratocaster and though it was a nice guitar I actually prefer my CAR 1971 Strat to that...!
Also I like the bigger headstock better than the smaller one (now that's strange, right..
).
My seventies :
1971 Strat (black, 4-screw neck plate)
1971 Strat (CAR)
1972 Strat (natural)
1976 Strat (black)
1980 Strat (STRAT in LPB)
1969 Tele (well, almost seventies...
)
1973 Tele Custom (natural)
1973 Tele Custom (sunburst)
1974 Tele DeLuxe (with strat tremolo!)
