I guess an SD custom or even an Invader would sound good in the N4

The Custom (and any Custom 5 or Custom Custom) is a good combination with the N4, except for the Swamp Ash N4 cause these pickups are already on the bright side. I've tested a N4ESA with a Custom once and the sound was thin and brittle, and attacks were kinda harsh. My friend who owned this guitar is mainly a soloist, so he put that and a Air Norton as his neck pickup, and that was fine for him to cut through the mix. But really, don't think of having any "oomph" to your rhythm sound, nor having a decent clean sound with this pickup on a Swamp Ash guitar.

And about the Invader, it might be a good match on the EQ side, but overall, the sound is too compressed due to the high output level of the pickup that kinda makes all pick attacks sound to the same level. Not sure that's what you'd like considering your tastes and the changes you've been doing on your guitar.

Well, my "padauk" N4 is a painted swamp ash really

I've read mixed opinions about the custom and that's why I don't dare to try it myself.

With all these changes what I'm basically trying to do is to have a more balanced sounding guitar. The N4 is a naturally bright guitar and while that's fine, I need something fuller sounding, hence all the changes....

BTW I tried the Air Norton once and it sounded pretty vulgar and ordinary to me, I pulled it out of my guitar after one week. I didn't found anything special about it, no character, but that's just me....

I've had the chance to play through Nuno's rig with his very own N4 and I can tell you his sound lies in his hands. He has a very strong pick attack and uses ultra-thick picks. When I grabbed his guitar, it didn't sound nowhere as him. It was thin and bright as hell. It was a flooring experience to me . I guess I'm trying to adapt my N4 to my playing / rig (2x Marshall 2x12" combos and an assortment of DIY pedals)

BTW Nuno's guitar..... I played it for 30 minutes approx, it was a really acoustically resonant N4, but it wasn't any different than any other off-the-shelf N4 I've tried. Pretty battered though

Honnestly, you should consider trying some EQ pedal between your guitar and the preamp.. you can do amazing things with that and completely change the response of your pickup ;-)

as for 'the sound lies in his hands' that's what I've been telling for years ;-)
A guitarist's sound is 50% in the hands / 50% in the gear (if not 80% in the hands in some cases.)
bon..

On m'aurait menti?...

- Seymour Duncan '59 en Bridge pick-up
