Someone recently posted a comment on the new BIT : Legend of Fuzz video about all my fuzz's sounding the same, and... being the kind of open minded person I am these days, I decided to go through the videos with the frame of mind that there were no differences.
It was an interesting experience, because it occurred to me that from a certain view point, a lot of them do sound the same... but of course, I come from a natural tendency to notice all the peculiarities of sound that most people seem to miss (i.e. my recent annoyance with the kick drum mixing of the new smashing pumpkins song FOL which not a soul has mentioned yet before me on the 'net as far as I have found).
For instance... the new videos of the Never Drive and BIT do have these places where the fuzz's sound similar... but there is (to me) and obvious brightness and splattering of the Never Drive that the BIT doesn't have, while the BIT has a lower-string intensity and odd decay that the Never Drive doesn't have.
Now, from a technical stand point the BIT and Never Drive are two different evolutionary beasts (BIT being a piggybacked 33 and GZ, Never Drive being an off shoot of the Torn's Peaker circuit... both totally different design evolutions), so it's not an artifact of the circuit like the Aenima and Torn's Peaker are in similarities. It's just that fuzz... from a certain frame of reference, mixed a certain way... played with the same types of riff's with the same type of gear... does indeed tend to sound more similar than if you were to say... compare a big muff with a Tele going through a Vox, rather than a muff with a Les Paul going through an Orange amp.
Anyhow... all of this boils down to the arguement of "well what's the big deal if devi's pedal cover a wide but similar range of fuzz when there are people hammering out a million varities of big muff's, fuzz face's, tone bender's, and tube screamers"....
... but I figure I'd open this up to "official" discussion since it seems like the topic comes up consistently enough.
Have fun.
